Earth Day: Easy Recycling Lesson
Every 22 April we celebrate Earth Day, a day when we try to be as nice as we can as the planet that has been putting up with us for so long, and a day to devote to being green and playing nice with nature. While that day has passed this year, there are still lessons to be learned. When we are concerned with being eco-friendly, Earth Day lessons are never too late to be shared, especially to the up and comers who are ready to understand what we are doing to the planet Earth and how can we live in moderation in order to prolong the natural resources it provides us. Here are some of these lessons:
#1 – Keep Rubbish Away from Nature
You’ve heard about waste clearance hikes, right? It’s when a group of people, armed with rubbish bags and gloves, goes around parks, reserves, woods, coasts and so on and does a full on clearance service to the place, sending all the rubbish there for waste disposal. This is something that kids should know about as soon as possible, since prevention is often the best clearance you can do. Introduce them to the bad effects of littering and pollution and then make sure that they are aware of how much help they can do if either they refrain from littering or joining such groups.
#2 – The Good of Composting Heaps
Teach kids about the benefits of composting. Some of them might actually have a home with a garden where a parent keeps a compost pile. Have them understand what the benefit of composting is and not just for the garden. Organic waste disposal can be done in more ways than one and this is one of them. And since kids are big on crawly things, show them the worms composting experiment which shows why worms are nature’s waste recycling system.
#3 – Landfills Are Bad
Teach people where all the rubbish goes after the rubbish collection. The landfills are often the worst type of pollutant since they only get bigger and very little can be done about them. And all un-recycled things go straight to landfills where all that rubbish and the huge junk collection emits horrible toxins that are bad for the environment in various ways, and even worse for people living nearby.
#4 – Paper Can Be both Recycled and Reused
Paper is maybe the most recyclable thing on the planet since there is 100% efficiency when recycling it – all of it gets sucked up in the process and about 90% of it is reused with no consequences. And even if not sent for recycling, kids can still reuse paper at home in the form of paper toys, paper jewellery, and even paper hats. Bring out their creative side by lowering the amount of paper waste clearance done at home.
#5 – Earth Resources Are Limited
This might be a harsh lesson, but it is a vital one. No matter how big and vast and massive the Earth is, its resources don’t exactly grow on trees (not all of them, anyway). Everything has a limit, and by not doing our job to lower waste, we are doing our own planet a big disservice. By recycling, we literally save the planet. So if you want the kids to cooperate better, let them have the roles of tiny superheroes and help them learn to reuse, repurpose, and recycle instead of dumping everything in the rubbish disposal bin. It is a simple step, and one that works and should be made.
These Earth Day lessons will teach kids all about the planet they live on and what they can do to keep it safe and make the environment a better place. Well educated kids mean less littering in the future and cleaner air to enjoy once all their hard work kicks in and starts making a difference.
